Frequently Asked Questions

Please review this FAQ before contacting the academy. If your query is not included in this list, feel free to get in touch with us!

Q: I would like to sign-up for a membership, but I travel for work often. What can I do?

If you go out of town, you can freeze your membership at no cost. All you have to do is fill out a “freeze form” at the academy* and provide us with a return date. Your membership payments will automatically go into effect upon your return date.

*Freeze forms are not available online at this moment (they are coming soon). Until then, you must fill one out at the academy.

Q: Do you offer private lessons?

We offer private classes in both BJJ and Muay Thai. Please note that Master Renzo Gracie does not give private lessons. To take private lessons with Prof. John Danaher, please select that option from our contact form dropdown. Click here to be redirected to our contact page.

Please call our academy if you’re interested in booking a private class with any of our other instructors.

Q: Do I have to wear a rash guard under my Gi?

You are not obligated to wear a rash guard under your Gi but it’s highly recommended. We have rash guards for sale at the academy.

Q: I forgot my belt, may I train without a belt?

No, you may not train without a belt. We kindly ask that you train in a complete uniform. We rent belts for $5.

Q: Does your school have showers?

Yes, we do have showers and antibacterial soap in each stall. Feel free to bring your own toiletries and towel. We also rent shower towels for $3.

Q: What are your hours of operations?

We open at 6:40am and close at 9:30pm Monday-Friday. On Saturdays we open at 8:30am and close at 3pm. We are closed on Sundays but our members are allowed to train in our Williamsburg academy (RGFA).

Q: When does Master Renzo teach?

If he’s not traveling, Master Renzo usually teaches the advanced no-Gi class Saturdays.

Q: May I attend no-Gi with as a White Belt?

You must have at least three (3) stripes on your White Belt in order to take a no-Gi class. It is important for our students to learn the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu wearing the Gi first. The Gi allows students to learn the concepts of control at a slower, yet much more effective, pace.

Q: Do you offer MMA classes?

We don’t offer MMA classes to the public. In order to attend this type of class, you must be a member of our academy for a significant amount of time. If you’re serious about this class, please express it to one of our coaches and please be extremely respectful towards everyone involved. This class is invite-only.

Q: How many classes am I allowed to take per month?

Our membership is unlimited so for one set price, you’ll be allowed to take as many classes as your schedule permits.

Q: When does John Danaher teach?

Professor Danaher’s classes are currently closed for visitors. Only existing students can join.

Professor Danaher’s schedule is as follows:

No-Gi Classes:
Mondays at 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM,
Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7:30 AM.

Gi Classes:
Tuesdays – Fridays at 12:30 PM.

Please note: Prof. Danaher does not do a warm-up at the beginning of class.
Feel free to come earlier and stretch on the mats before he starts.

Q: Can I try a class?

If you’re serious about joining our team, we do allow a free trial class in both BJJ and Muay Thai. You must be living in New York.

Q: I’m not a member of your academy. As a visitor, may I wear my own Gi?

Only if your Gi is blank and does not contain references to another academy. We kindly ask for you to not wear another academy’s Gi. If you don’t have a Gi with you, or if your Gi contains branding from another academy, you will have to rent a Gi ($10) from our academy.

Q: Do you allow drop-ins?

We allow drop-ins only for BJJ. A visitor day pass is $40 which allows you to train in as many classes as your schedule allows. If you’re from a Renzo Gracie affiliate school, a day pass is $20.

Unfortunately, we do not allow drop-ins for Muay Thai at this moment.
